Mamie Taylor
I love dense, complex cable patterns and think hats are the perfect place to experiment with fun motifs. They’re quick and easy and have minimal shaping to worry about, so getting a little detailed can be fun.
The repeating diamond and cable motif on this one adds both depth and geometry to the design, and the gorgeous heather in this yarn really shows the highs and lows of the pattern off beautifully. The ribbing is designed to stagger into the diamonds, and the cables themselves are much easier than you’d expect! Plus, I’m really a pom fan now, although it works both ways.

Yarn: De Rerum Natura Gilliatt (100% Merino Wool; 273yds/250m per 100g/3.5oz skein). Shown in Plume de Paon and Goeland.
If substituting yarn, a tweed, solid, semi-solid or another heather in a worsted weight wool will work best. Something with a little depth, but not much variegation shows the pattern off beautifully. I would suggest a wool fiber with memory and minimal drape for a longer lasting, better fitting hat.
