Broken Oath
Broken Oath is a play on the classic Fisherman's Sweater design that we all know and love. Worked in a deep, natural gray with bold details, it brings just a bit more drama to the usual formula.
I used the traditional approach, with overall texture on the body and cable panels around a center section at front. However, the elegant, undulating cables here are not the classic ones you usually see, and texture on the body is translated into bold garter stitch stripes.
These details look fantastic in any color, but l added them specifically because I wanted a design that would not be lost in a deep, gorgeous gray such as this one.
The yarn I used is Bare Naked Wools' Kent Worsted in Mussel Shell. The subtle sheen and drape of this soft fiber, and the stunning heather of this shade had me the moment I spotted the skeins at last year's Rhinebeck. The mix of Merino and Romney in the Kent is perfect - it's not too rustic, but it's also got some personality, if you know what I mean...
Broken Oath is worked in the round from hem to armholes and then split into front and back pieces, which are worked flat to shoulders. Once shoulders are seamed, stitches are picked up for both collar and sleeves, which are worked in the round to end. Pattern contains many notes for modifications, and cables are both charted and written.

Yarn: Bare Naked Wools Kent Worsted 2ply yarn (60% Merino, 40% Romney wool), approx. 220yds/200m per 4oz/115g skein. Sample knit in Mussel Shell.
If substituting yarn, I suggest a wool or wool blend. Use a light aran or a heavy worsted weight yarn. Another natural color, a tweed, or a heather shade would give you a close vibe to mine. A fiber with some halo might also be beautiful. I do not suggest yarns with pronounced texture or variegation. Memory or drape in substitute yarns may vary, as may final yardage. Be sure to swatch both cable and garter/stockinette and block all swatches as you will your sweater.
Gauge: 16 sts and 24 rows/rounds per 4”/10 cm in both stockinette and garter stitch pattern. Each 18-stitch cable panel is 3”/7.5cm wide. Rib on smaller needle around collar 18 sts and 24 rounds per 4”/10cm. Gauge is based on final, blocked fabric. Adjust needle size(s) if needed.
Needles: US#8/5mm and US#7/4.5mm. I suggest a long circular for body, a 16”/40.5cm circular needle for collar, and preferred method for small circumferences on sleeves. US#7/4.5mm needle is used for sleeve cuff and collar. Swatch using your larger needle.

For fit shown, I suggest 5-7”/12.75-17.75cm of positive ease.
