Boston Bog

$8.00

Boston Bog was designed in Wing and A Prayer Farm's All the Single Ladies to celebrate the New England Farm and Fiber Festival, happening in downtown Boston on Feb 2, 2025.

This deeply cabled hat takes advantage of the gorgeous heather and bounce in this shetland yarn, which shows off a cable beautifully! These cables are deeply crossed, which gives the hat a snug fit when worn, and makes for some dramatic lines. I love the balance of thick and thin lines across the body in this motif.

I've created a simple brim here, using the ribbing to set up stitches for the cables above. This section can be knit deeper if desired, but I wanted to keep the focus on the cables this time so I kept it somewhat narrow to devote more space to the pattern.

The crown on Boston Bog is a bit less rounded than usual, with at a touch of extra room at top for a modern shape that flows right out of the last cable cross.

Notes are in the pattern for adjusting the sizing on this hat. You can tweak circumference or depth in a few ways. Cable instructions are both charted and written out.

The color of the yarn shown is Rose Mallow (but note that hand-dyed yarn may vary from skein to skein).

Yarn: Wing and A Prayer Farm All the Single Ladies (100% Shetland, 3-strand single ply wool, 238yds/218m per 3.53oz/100g skein). Color shown is Rose Mallow.

If substituting yarn, I suggest a wool or wool blend with strong stitch definition that will knit to gauge. A solid, heather, tweed, or a very subtle hand dyed fiber will show off the pattern best. Note that modifications to the pattern or an alternate yarn choice may affect yardage needed.

Gauge: Each repeat of the 14-st, 12-round cable motif is 2.25”/5.75cm wide and 2”/5cm deep or 6.25 sts/ 6 rnds per 1”/2.5cm. Brim gauge on smaller needles should be a little tighter than cable gauge and able to stretch when worn. Adjust needle size if needed. Gauges based on final, blocked fabric laid flat.

Needles: US #5/3.75mm and US #8/5mm needles, or sizes to get gauge. 16”/40.5cm circular needle for body and DPNs in larger size for crown.

Sizes:

Circumf: 18(20.25,22.5)”/45.75(51.5,57.25)cm.

Depth: 9.5”/24.25cm from cast on to center crown.

Pattern opens up when worn with 1-2”/2.5-5cm of negative ease as shown.

Measurements based on final, blocked fabric, laid flat.

Yardage:

175(200,225)yds/160(185,205)m of worsted weight yarn needed to make hat as shown.
